Understanding SABR

Radiotherapy That Targets Cancer With Millimetre Accuracy

SABR, also known as SBRT (stereotactic body radiotherapy), is a precise, non-surgical treatment that targets tumours with pinpoint accuracy. Using advanced imaging and real-time tracking technology, high doses of radiation are delivered directly to the site of disease, from multiple angles, with the goal of protecting as much healthy tissue as possible.

For patients with primary or metastatic cancer, SABR offers a way to treat tumours that surgery cannot reach, or where surgery carries too great a risk. Every patient is different, and so is every treatment plan. While some disruption to daily life is normal, many of our patients are able to continue with their routines throughout, and our team will be with you every step of the way.

Most patients complete their treatment in one to five sessions, with the majority returning to day-to-day life shortly after.

Is SABR the Treatment You Have Been Looking For?

SABR is suitable for a broader range of patients than many expect. If any of the following apply to you, we can review your case and advise whether it may be an appropriate option at consultation.

You have a primary cancer and want to avoid surgery

Anyone with a confirmed primary tumour seeking a precise, non-surgical alternative with curative intent.

Your cancer has spread to a limited number of sites

Patients with oligometastatic disease, typically one to five sites, who want to target every site of disease with the goal of reaching clear scans.

You've been told surgery is too high risk

Whether because of other health conditions or the location of your tumour, SABR can reach and treat sites that surgery cannot safely address.

You want to delay or reduce systemic treatment

Patients who want to avoid starting chemotherapy, or reduce ongoing dependence on it, by using SABR to control metastatic disease precisely.

SABR Offers a Way Forward Where Other Treatments Have Not

A cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, particularly when you are trying to understand what treatment options are available to you. We treat a wide range of primary and metastatic cancers, and for many patients, SABR is available where other treatments are not.

Why Choose SABR Radiotherapy

Advanced Non-Surgical Cancer Treatment

If you have been told your cancer has spread, it is natural to feel that your options are narrowing. In many cases, they are not.

For patients with a limited number of metastatic sites, SABR can be used to target and eradicate every site of disease, slow progression, and in some cases reduce or remove the need for ongoing chemotherapy.

Whether it is right for you depends on a careful review of your individual situation, including the location and number of metastases, how your cancer is progressing, and how it has responded to previous treatment.

If you would like to find out whether SABR is an option for you, request a consultation and we will give you clear, honest guidance.

Fewer Sessions
SABR typically requires just 1 to 5 sessions, compared to daily treatments over 6 or more weeks with conventional radiotherapy.
Quick Recovery
Most patients return to their normal routine within days of completing treatment, with no surgical recovery period required.
Pinpoint Precision
Advanced CT, PET and MRI imaging targets each tumour with millimetre precision, shaped to the exact contours of the cancer.
Healthy Tissue Protected
High doses are delivered directly to the tumour while surrounding healthy tissue receives significantly less exposure.
Up to 95% Control Rate
For carefully selected patients, SABR achieves up to 95% control of treated lesions, making it one of the most effective treatments available.
Treats Difficult Locations
SABR can reach tumours near vital organs including the heart, spine, liver, brain and major airways, where surgery may not be possible.
